What Makes a Good Life? Follow-up report: Views of children and young people in care on wellbeing

Author: Oranga Tamariki I Ministry for Children and the Office of the Children's Commissioner

As a part of this engagement, Oranga Tamariki and the Children's Commissioner heard from 113 children and young people under the age of 18 who were in care and they compared their responses to those not in care.

This follow-up report presents the four key themes that were heard from these children in care through focus groups and interviews:

  1. I want support for my whānau
  2. Oranga Tamariki has the potential to make things better, but sometimes makes things worse
  3. I want to feel loved and respected
  4. I want the basics.

There was also a fifth finding based on the survey results:

     5. Across a range of wellbeing indicators, children and young people in non-whānau care generally fare worse than their peers.

Overall, the report found that there are a number of things which need to happen to improve the wellbeing of children and young people in care.
