Te Whatu Ora (initiative previously led by the Ministry of Health) has been delivering a phased oral health promotion initiative to promote regular tooth brushing with fluoride toothpaste. The initiative is aimed at family and whānau of preschool children, particularly Maori, Pacific and those on low incomes.

The latest phase of the oral health promotion initiative involves the provision of toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste to pre-school age children and their whānau. Implementation got underway in December 2021, via 25 Well Child tamariki Ora providers, with further providers engaged to deliver the initiative.

Next steps include:

  • a Kaupapa Māori evaluation provider has been commissioned and draft evaluation plan is in progress
  • further development of collateral and social marketing.
